New York Giants Draft Prospect Profile: RB Roschon Johnson

We continue our look at potential running back depth.

Roschon Johnson, RB

Height: 6’0
Weight: 225 lbs.
Class: Senior
School: Texas

Roschon Johnson was the sixth-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the country out of Port Neches-Groves, Texas, from the 2019 recruiting class. Johnson committed to the Texas Longhorns over Arkansas, Baylor, Florida, and Florida State.

Notables

Due to injuries, Johnson moved from dual-threat quarterback to running back before his freshman year with the intention of moving back to quarterback after the year. There was a change of plans, however, when Johnson picked up 5.3 yards per carry and seven touchdowns, leading to a permanent move.

Strengths

  • Runs like he has hate in his heart
  • Going to create extra yardage on his own after contact (71.86% of his career rushing yards came after contact)
  • Consistently protects the ball
  • Does a good job of identifying blitzers in pass protection
  • Best pass-protecting back in the draft by a considerable margin
  • Can pick up chunk plays consistently
  • Patiently waits for rushing lanes to open

Weaknesses

  • Not creative as a runner
  • Stiff as an athlete
  • Not much of a home run threat
  • Never given starter carries
  • Has been solid as a pass-catcher when targeted but wasn’t involved much

Summary

Johnson is one of the most overlooked running backs in the 2023 Draft, in my opinion. While lacking elite creativity and elusiveness, Johnson does everything a team could ask for in a running back. The ceiling isn’t very high, but he could become one of the most reliable backs on a committee.
