New York Giants Draft Prospect Profile: QB Max Duggan

Max Duggan has been linked to the Giants as a potential developmental quarterback prospect. Let's find out what he has to offer.

Max Duggan, QB

Height: 6-foot-1 ⅝”
Weight: 207 lbs.
Class: Fourth-Year Senior
School: TCU

Max Duggan was the fourth-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the 2019 recruiting class out of Council Bluffs, Iowa. Durham committed to TCU over Arizona State, Georgia, Indiana, Nebraska, and his home state, Iowa.

Notables

Duggan started for the Horned Frogs as a true freshman in 2019 before starting 2022 as a backup while recovering from off-season heart surgery to fix his Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome. Duggan returned as the starter in 2021 and was named the backup in 2022, but in week one took over as the starter due to an injury to lead TCU to the College Football National Championship. Was held back by horrible offensive systems until the 2022 season.

Strengths

  • If you want to see a true freshman put on the show of a lifetime with nothing but ice in his veins, watch TCU vs Baylor 2019.
  • Quick, smooth throwing motion
  • Comfortable operating as an RPO passer
  • Physical as a runner but also can make a man miss
  • Will do whatever it takes to convert first downs
  • Comfortable going through his reads before taking off
  • Impressive movement in the pocket to extend plays
  • Confidence has never been an issue, no matter how hot or cold he gets

Weaknesses

  • Height is going to be a bit of a concern for someone who likes to throw over the middle of the field, a larger offensive line, and narrower throwing lanes could be an issue
  • Struggles with getting the ball downfield accurately on a consistent basis
  • Needs to get his upper half more in sync with his lower half as a passer, which would improve his accuracy
  • Lacks velocity on throws as he gets further downfield
  • Tends to stare down receivers for far too long
  • Doesn’t do a good job of hitting receivers in stride for yards after catch opportunities
  • Tends to try to Josh Allen it through contact instead of sliding or running out of bounds to avoid contact, could be a concern long-term
  • Doesn’t have the physical skillset to be a franchise quarterback

Summary

Duggan is one of the grittiest runners I’ve ever seen at the quarterback position with average arm talent, but all of the intangibles to will an offense to production. (There’s a reason I call him Texas Tebow.)

With Duggan’s tendency to attack the middle of the field as a passer and pick up chunk yardage with his legs, he’s a fantastic day-three fit that could be a spot-starter for Brian Daboll and Mike Kafka’s offense.
