Something may be changing when BBC Radio 4’s The World Tonight yesterday (Monday) allowed a Palestinian journalist on to speak about the latest atrocity, and to use the term resistance fighters.
With 45 burned to death in a designated safe zone, when the alleged target was two Hamas leaders, we get a reminder of the cold logic of the racist colonial blood lust of Israel’s far right wing government.
That there is no hospital to treat the burns of the injured will likely be excused by their apologists in Shetland Labour Party and Lerwick Town Hall.
Even after Israel’s leader is wanted on trial for war crimes and the ICJ [International Court of Justice] has ordered his murderous ‘defence’ force to leave Gaza, neither leader of Great Britain’s main political parties, Conservative or con-Labour, wish to talk about suspending UK licences for arms sales to apartheid Israel.
The only vote possible for people of conscience in Shetland would seem to be Lib-Dem, Green or SNP. But because Westminster is, and will remain, bought and paid for, whoever is allowed into Number 10 Downing Street, a vote for the Lib-Dems remains a vote for the international status quo.
An independent Scotland would have formally recognised a Palestinian state by now, as Norway, Spain and Ireland today have. Tied to American and Israeli interests as it is, the United Kingdom has not.
Starmer’s sell-out Labour Party has forgotten the meaning of solidarity, is weak on tackling child poverty, and according to union leaders, their approach to workers’ rights is full of holes.
Shetland’s Green candidate Alex Armitage stands out as knowledgeable and personable. He evidently cares a great deal about his fellow islanders whilst showing solidarity with those further afield. The strongest moral message Shetland’s electorate can send in this election is by voting Green.
