Sport / ‘Great weekend’ south for junior football squad
LAST weekend saw the Shetland junior football 2010 development squad travel south with a pool of 25 players to play four games against three mainland opponents.
The first game was on the Friday against Dunblane FC at their home venue at Dunblane High School.
Although Shetland took the lead through a goal from Alfie Reid, they ultimately lost 7-1.
The Saturday fixtures were both played against Musselburgh Windsor FC who are said to be a top outfit in their given leagues.
Shetland won the first game 5-0, with Frankie Tait, Finlay Moar and Cozmin Cozma on the scoresheet.
The second game of the day started soon after, with Roma Robertson, Sonny Redman and Lockie Bullough scoring in a 3-0 victory.
The last game on the Sunday was against Stenhousemuir FC, with the game being played in the home team’s senior ground Ochilview Park which was said to be a “great experience for the players”.
Shetland lost 4-3 in a tight game in which Cozma and Theo Thomason scored for the blues.
Martin Summers, who is involved with the development team, said: “Over the course of the whole weekend the Shetland squad can hold their heads up a high after putting in numerous impressive displays against top opposition.
“It was a great weekend of football, with some great results and lessons learnt for the 2010s.
“The coaching team try to make sure these trips are first and foremost about the football, however it’s also about the experiences and friendships they get from being involved.”
Players also had the opportunity to experience professional football in action when they watched Livingston take on Celtic on the Sunday (31 March).
Summers added a word of thanks to the officials across the Central Belt for organising the games, the Shetland travelling support and also sponsors E&H and NorthLink Ferries – plus the public who have fundraised for the squad.
