Sport / Strong start in badminton singles
SHETLAND’S badminton players have made a solid start in the singles tournament today (Tuesday).
In the men’s round of 64, Ramsay Hogg, Dean Guthrie and Thomas Calder all beat their opponents 2-0.
Luca Russell was beaten by Alexander Hutchings from Jersey and therefore has been eliminated from the tournament.
The other three Shetlanders progressed onto the round of 32.
Hogg lost his game to Tobey Cheng from the Isle of Man, but Guthrie and Calder both won their matches again.
Both men will continue to the round of 16.
For the women, Ruth Anderson and Chloe Hitchin both won their matches in the round of 64.
Stephanie Keith narrowly missed out by losing 2-1 to Manx player Leah Brennan.
Shona Mackay received a bye, meaning that she advances to the next round without playing because she was not assigned an opponent.
Their games in the round of 32 are set to begin shortly.
In table tennis, the Shetland team lost 4-2 to the Isle of Man earlier today.
They went on to play Menorca in the position playoffs to decide which team ranks 11th and 12th.
Shetland lost again, with the final score being 4-3 to Menorca.
