Entertainment / Busy week ahead at Mareel
ARTS venue Mareel says it is looking forward to “a remarkably busy week” with programming returning to levels similar to those before the Covid pandemic.
On Thursday 26 May the Scottish Ensemble return to the Mareel stage celebrating the stories of Scotland in Scottish Creations.
The evening begins with 45 minutes of Scottish music, the heart of which is a brand-new piece by Celtic harpist Ailie Robertson which explores some of the typical characters found in storytelling.
Interspersed with her music will be pieces from other distinctive voices of Scottish music such as James MacMillan and Anna Meredith.
To round off the evening the Scottish Ensemble will be joined by local musicians for an hour long session of relaxed traditional music.
The following evening Shetland Arts is hosting a free and informal talk by visiting artist Holly Veselka, starting at 6.30pm at Mareel.
Veselka is a conceptual artist based in Texas and is currently taking part in the X-CHANGE residency, based at The Booth in Scalloway.
An assistant professor in the School of Art and Design at Texas State University, she creates moving image work, digital archives and installations exploring humanity’s relationship with the natural world.
The event is a free but ticketed event.
Meanwhile in the Mareel auditorium, people can see the results of the What if …?/Scotland: Ideas for a better place project.
Presented are five proposals developed by Lerwick citizens; each of the 25 people who participated in the project were asked how they would like their places to be changed for the better with open questions like: how will we live together, what does the future of your place look like, and what if you could change it?
The free exhibition will be open between 11am and 8pm on Friday and Saturday, 27 and 28 May.
