Scottish Parliament Election 2021 / Martin Kerr
Labour
I’ve never stood for election before but I believe I have the right experience – as a lawyer and a campaigner – to represent you well.
We need politicians with a laser focus on securing the Covid recovery and addressing inequalities within our society. That’ll be Scottish Labour’s focus in the next Parliament.
The last year has been tough for us all. The pandemic has separated us from our friends and family. Despite that, we have come together like never before. That’s why this election must be about delivering a National Recovery Plan that at its heart is about creating jobs, catching up on education and rebuilding our NHS – so we never again have to choose between treating a virus or treating cancer.
We can’t rely on the SNP to focus on the recovery when they are pursuing a divisive referendum as their top priority. At the same time we can’t expect Boris Johnson’s Tories to deliver a recovery that works for us all.
Whether you were Leave or Remain or a Yes or a No in the referendums, we can surely agree that while we recover from the health, social and economic crisis brought by Covid, the challenge ahead is clear: we need a recovery strategy for education, jobs and the NHS.
Let’s pick education, where the SNP have presided over widening attainment gaps, an exam fiasco and declining standards – Scottish Labour propose the following education comeback plan:
- A national tutoring scheme
- A personal comeback plan for each pupil
- A resit guarantee
- A summer comeback focused on sport and activity
I also pledge to strongly oppose the centralisation of Air Traffic Control, press for the Scottish Government to fund the running costs for an MRI scanner, support fixed links funding for the isles and to focus on what unites us and not what divides us.
Only both votes for Scottish Labour can ensure we deliver a Parliament that focuses on that recovery.
