News / Relay For Life survey
THE LOCAL Relay For Life committee is asking the public for their thoughts on when next year’s event should be held.
Organisers of the biennial fundraising drive, which generated over £183,000 for Cancer Research UK (CRUK) last year, are worried its usual late May date will clash with other events in 2018.
An online survey has been launched to gather the community’s opinions on when they feel the relay should be held, as well as to receive suggestions on how to improve the Lerwick event.
The committee will also visit communities across the isles in the build-up to the 2018 event to help people register and set up teams.
Cancer Research UK has decided to make entry to the event free to encourage more people to sign up.
In 2014 the event raised a record-breaking total of more than £300,000.
Last year’s Relay For Life was held at Lerwick’s Gilbertson Park for the first time due to ongoing construction work on the new Anderson High School, which is next to the usual Clickimin running track venue.
The event saw teams walking around the park in a circuit from the evening through to the morning.
The total amount of money raised in Shetland for CRUK since the relay began in 2006 stands at over £1,138,000.
