News / Donation for disruption
A YOUNG Shetland man with learning difficulties who was drunk when he disrupted the island’s most successful fundraising event will donate £300 to the cancer charity concerned.
Around 2,000 people attended the Relay for Life event at Lerwick’s Clickimin Leisure Complex on 27 May last year where they raised almost £300,000 for Cancer Research.
Unemployed Christopher Irvine, of 6a Union Street. Lerwick, had been drinking heavily when he turned up on the athletics track, barged into people and kicked over lanterns lit in memory of loved ones.
In Lerwick Sheriff Court on Thursday, Irvine said that he was ashamed of what he had done that night.
His defence agent Christopher Maitland said alcohol and his difficulties with crowds had contributed to his behaviour, which Sheriff Philip Mann described as “particularly distasteful”.
Mann placed Irvine under supervision for one year and gave him nine months to make his £300 donation as part of his community payback order.
