Times Ivanka Trump Tried to Distance Herself From Trump Family

In 2023, we’re tired of women who say they’re not like other girls — and we’re beyond tired of Ivanka Trump pretending that she’s not like other Trumps. After four years serving as former President Donald Trump’s senior advisor alongside husband Jared Kushner, during which time the couple reported between $172 million and $640 million in outside income, much of it from their stake in Trump hotels, Ivanka has now launched an extended campaign to have the public stop associating her with her father’s misdeeds. Ironically, cutting ties with a political player as soon as their shine starts to dull is a classic Trump family move, but Ivanka, undeterred, would now like to return to being perceived as an apolitical wife and mother, publicly stating that she would be leaving politics behind to spend more time with her children.

While Ivanka’s efforts to distance herself from the Trump family ramped up considerably after his 2020 election loss and the staggering events of Jan. 6, 2021, after which she and Kushner took a long break from Trump political meetings and social events alike, her attempts to be seen as a unique entity date back much further. In a baffling 2017 interview, Ivanka contended on Fox & Friends that her viewpoints differed from her father’s on various political issues, despite the fact that she had advised his presidential campaign, was part of his transition team, and ultimately became a senior advisor to the President.

“I think it’s normal to not have 100 percent aligned viewpoints on every issue. I don’t think anyone operates like that with a parent, or within the context of an administration,” she said — preparing us for four years of jarring tone-switching from daughter to political advisor and back.

As Donald Trump moves forward with a 2024 presidential campaign of which Ivanka is decidedly not a part, here’s a review of every move his eldest daughter has made to distance herself from the Trump family and its political era.

When Ivanka & Jared Moved Farther Away From the Family in Florida

While Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner reside in Miami like the rest of the family, they live far away from the rest of the family. They live on the island known as “Billionaire Bunker” with neighbors like Jeff Bezos, Tom Brady, and Julio Iglesias.

Many were shocked to see Ivanka Trump go to Kim Kardashian’s birthday party, someone whom her father, Donald, isn’t a big fan of. However, she was seen having fun with her buddy, and ignoring questions about her father.
When She Dropped the Lawyers She Shared With Her Brothers

On April 26, the New York Post reported that Ivanka completely replaced the lawyers she once shared with her brothers Donald Jr. and Eric Trump in the $250 million lawsuit fraud case against the family’s real estate company. In addition to distancing herself from her brothers, the move might also indicate that Ivanka might be changing her defense strategy in the case.
When She Reportedly Claimed She Would ‘No Longer’ Help Donald Amid Legal Woes

A source told People in March 2023, “Even though Ivanka loves her dad, she knows how impossible he can be,” adding that Ivanka “is recreating her business life and raising her children, which are her priorities. She is through with politics.”

“Donald does what he wants, and she can’t help him now,” they added. “His help is in the hands of his lawyers and advisers. She is no longer working in that capacity.”
When She Said She Wasn’t ‘100 Percent Aligned’ With Trump’s Viewpoints

In June 2017, Ivanka attempted a staggering balancing act of both promoting her father’s administration and differentiating herself from statements he’d made. Just months after joining her father’s administration as a senior advisor, she gave an interview on Fox & Friends in which she claimed: “I try to stay out of politics.”

She went on to both praise Trump’s political skills and then contend that her own views differed from his on various issues.

“His political instincts are phenomenal. He did something that no one could have imagined he’d be able to accomplish,” she said, then added: “Naturally, there are areas where there is disagreement. We’re two different human beings. I think it’s normal to not have 100 percent aligned viewpoints on every issue. I don’t think anyone operates like that with a parent, or within the context of an administration. And I think that all different viewpoints being at the table is a positive thing.”
When She & Jared Kushner Skipped the Mar-a-Lago Social Calendar

As President Joe Biden’s administration began, Ivanka and husband Jared Kushner made their first moves to distance themselves from Trump and his administration. Not only did they skip a 75th birthday dinner for Donald Trump, but they also reportedly skipped “the usual spring and summer events” at Mar-a-Lago in 2021, according to a CNN source.
When She Reportedly Banned Friends From Mentioning Politics

According to CNN, Ivanka was so disillusioned with her father’s political career by March 2021 that she “told friends and colleagues of late to not utter anything to do with Washington.” Husband Jared Kushner simultaneously stepped away from Trump’s inner circle of advisors, staying out of “return to politics” strategy meetings that spring.
When She Told the Jan. 6 Committee There Was No Evidence of Election Fraud

Donald Trump left the White House after an extended campaign claiming that the 2020 win was stolen from him via mass election fraud, a line that those loyal to him parroted even as mounting evidence showed no such fraud had taken place. When Ivanka volunteered to speak with the Jan. 6 committee for their investigation into the Capitol riot (the volunteering itself a small betrayal already), she further went against the Donald Trump party line by confirming that she did not believe election fraud had taken place once she heard what Attorney General Barr had to say.

Trump railed against his own daughter hours after a clip of this testimony was made public, writing on Truth Social that “Ivanka Trump was not involved in looking at, or studying, Election results,” he wrote. “She had long since checked out and was, in my opinion, only trying to be respectful to Bill Barr and his position as Attorney General (he sucked!).”
When She Refused Donald Trump’s Request to Join His 2024 Campaign

In November 2022, sources from Tiffany Trump’s Mar-a-Lago wedding reported that Donald Trump was working hard to try and convince Ivanka and Jared to be a part of his 2024 campaign — and that they were holding firm in their refusal.

“Trump thought he could convince Ivanka this weekend to come back and campaign for him as she was the most requested speaker after the president himself last time around … but so far she’s resisting his entreaties and holding firm, as is Jared,” one source told the New York Post. “They both feel they got burned in Washington and don’t want to go back and expose themselves and their children to another bitter campaign.”
When She Publicly Confirmed She Was Stepping Away From Politics

Amid Donald Trump announcing a 2024 run for president, Ivanka gave a formal statement to various news outlets confirming she would not be involved, and explaining why.

“I love my father very much. This time around, I am choosing to prioritize my young children and the private life we are creating as a family. I do not plan to be involved in politics,” she shared.

“While I will always love and support my father, going forward I will do so outside the political arena…I am loving this time with my kids, loving life in Miami and the freedom and privacy with having returned to the private sector. This has been one of the greatest times of my life.”

She stressed that she was prioritizing being present in her kids’ lives going forward: “My kids are thriving, and I want to maintain this cadence — this rhythm — at this point in our family’s life…time is fleeting, and every parent will tell you it really does go by so quickly.”
When a Source Claimed Ivanka Wouldn’t Join Trump’s Campaign Even If He ‘Begged’

Around this time, an Us Weekly source was suddenly chock-full of inside information about why Ivanka wouldn’t be joining her father’s 2024 presidential campaign.

“Ivanka had a rotten time toward the end of her dad’s reign and in the many months that followed,” the source shared. “[When] the time came for her to step away she couldn’t do so fast enough.”

“Even if her dad begged her to be involved in his campaign again, Ivanka would turn it down flat,” the source continued. “Her priority is to pursue a calm, low-key life now and enjoy her new professional start in the private sector, raise her family and stay away from the circus and volatility that will surely be coming along with her dad’s campaign.”
When She Asked to Be Excluded From Trump Organization Financial Monitoring

In November, Ivanka filed an appeal to be excluded from new court-ordered financial monitoring of Trump family members, with her lawyers arguing that she “had no involvement” in the Trump Organization “for more than five years,” and specifically that: “Ms. Trump has had no role as an officer, director, or employee of the Trump Organization or any of its affiliates since at least January 2017.”

In December, that appeal was granted, allowing Ivanka to sidestep one more Trump family mess. She was the only Trump family member to hire her own lawyers and negotiate a better deal for herself, and the court granting this appeal set her on a markedly separate course from her next of kin.
When She Seemingly Passed the Blame On

Ivanka, the former president, and brothers Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump are involved in a $250 million fraud lawsuit brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James. They, and the Trump Organization, are accused of manipulating the value of their real estate holdings in order to turn a profit.

Now, Ivanka is asking for a trial delay, saying her job description at the Trump Organization had nothing to do with the lawsuit. According to court documents obtained by the U.K.’s Independent, the complaint “does not contain a single allegation that Ms. Trump directly or indirectly created, prepared, reviewed, or certified any of her father’s financial statements”. She’s passing the buck to her father and brothers and saying that there’s nothing to see here. Her legal team wrote, “Other individuals were responsible for those tasks.”
When She Missed Her Future Sister-in-Law’s Birthday Party

At Donald Trump Jr.’s fiancée Kimberly Guilfoyle’s 54th birthday party, Ivanka and Jared were noticeably absent, per Page Six. “They were invited to Kimberly’s birthday party and were so sad to miss it,” a source told the outlet explaining their absence. “Their niece’s bat mitzvah was Thursday evening and it had been planned a long time ago.”

Though we’ll never know if Ivanka and Jared really wanted to go or not, we can’t help but see this as another example of her keeping her distance from the rest of the family.
When She Started to Embrace Her New Persona

Within the past few months of 2023, Ivanka has doubled down on her beachy alter ego: going to beaches with her family and engaging in sporty activities none of her other siblings have done like wakeboarding and surfing.
