Simone Biles’ Husband Revealed How He Handled His Interview Controversy Behind the Scenes

Simone Biles‘ husband, Jonathan Owens, is a safety for the Chicago Bears, but he’s probably best known for his controversial statements late last year when he referred to himself as “the catch” in their marriage. Sports fans went wild on the internet, slamming the football player for his comments while supporting the GOAT of gymnastics.

In April, Biles revealed how the issue impacted her, but fans haven’t heard from Owens until now. He had a vastly different reaction from his wife, who is known to read her social media notifications. “I have all my social media notifications off, so I didn’t even know for a while,” he told Us Weekly. “I was actually with my mom and Simone whenever it came out, so, all the comments and everything, I just let them read it. I try to stay off of it, and obviously if you feel like stuff is kind of getting out of hand, that’s when you reach in and say something.”

The NFL player seemed calm and confident about his reaction because he understood that the keyboard warriors would always have something to say. “I don’t mean to cuss, but like, damned if you do, damned if you don’t,” Owens added. “If you say something, they’re going to say something; if you don’t say something, they’re going to say something. So, just live your life. People are going to talk about you anyway, so you might as well do it the way you want to.”

It was a different situation for Biles, who was exhausted by the discourse even though she was originally amused by the memes. “I’m like, ‘Why are you guys talking about my husband like this?’ You don’t know him. You don’t know who he is,” Biles shared on the Call Her Daddy podcast. “If anybody’s met him, they know he’s the sweetest guy and will do anything for anybody. Talk about me all you want, but don’t come for my family.”

Since then, Owens has been Biles’ No. 1 cheerleader in the run-up to her third Olympics. He’s been seen cheering and applauding for his wife in the stands, and he will make a quick trip to Paris to watch her compete. “The Bears are actually granting him a couple of days off from training camp, so he’ll be there, yes,” Biles said in a press conference on Sunday, June 30. “For just a short little time.” The Biles-Owens marriage is doing just fine — they don’t need any input from the internet.
