Hong Kong prison officers have used pepper spray to subdue 13 detainees involved in a fight at a correctional facility in Stanley.

The Correctional Services Department on Wednesday said that the fight broke out at around 11.14pm the day before in a dormitory at the minimum-security Tung Tau Correctional Institution.

“Officers at the scene immediately ordered them to stop, called for reinforcements and applied [pepper spray] to subdue them after repeated warnings were ignored,” it said.

One of the detainees suffered injuries to his nose and a leg during the incident, but did not request hospital treatment after being seen by the prison medical officer.

The incident has been reported to police to investigate.

The department said the 13 detainees were remanded on offences such as drug trafficking, robbery, narcotics manufacturing, and wounding with intent.
