Readings and translations of the work of Guerra Junqueiro in Spain

Abstract

The main objective of this study is to examine the reception of Guerra Junqueiro in Spain through the readings and translations of his literary work over time. Initially, it deals with the vast fame, nowadays almost forgotten, that this Portuguese writer achieved in the neighbouring country, due in large part to his Iberian spirit and his progressive political thought. Then, in the field of readings, the contributions of Clarín, Ramón del Valle-Inclán and Miguel de Unamuno are analysed. In the last part, we review the versions of their texts, both in newspapers and magazines and in books. As far as this aspect is concerned, special attention is paid to the work of the Galician writer Manuel Curros Enríquez, largely collected in La Lira Lusitana (1883), and of the poet and playwright Eduardo Marquina, who was in charge of translating most of Guerra Junqueiro's titles for the same publishing house. Finally, the presence of the Portuguese poet in different anthologies is reviewed.
