A verbal argument between a group of people in Ontario escalated into a shooting, killing one and critically injuring another, police said Monday.

On Sunday, July 7, officers responded around 5 p.m. to a report of a shooting in an alleyway on the 1100 block of East Nocta Street. Two males, whose identities  have not been released, were found suffering from gunshot wounds. One male died in the alleyway while another male, described as an adult, was hospitalized with critical injuries.

A firearm was also recovered from the scene, the Ontario Police Department said in a statement.

Police stopped a vehicle that was attempting to leave the area and detained two men, 24-year-old Guillermo Gonzalez from Ontario and 30-year-old Miguel Alvarez-Rangel from Montclair, who were believed to be involved in the shooting. Alvarez-Rangel was injured and hospitalized before he was charged with murder and assault with a firearm. Police described him as the primary suspect.

Gonzalez, who police said had an active role in the incident, was charged with murder and as an accessory to murder, police said.
