A 14-year-old boy who was going to be a freshman and a member of the football team this fall at Chino High died Sunday, June 30, after being pulled from the school pool on Friday, June 28.

The cause of death for Jason Phan of Ontario was pending, said sheriff’s Sgt. Matthew Parrish, a spokesman for the Orange County Coroner’s Office. The teenager was taken to Children’s Hospital of Orange County before he died.

There was no evidence of a crime, Parrish said.

An official school activity was taking place in the aquatics center on Friday around 2:30 p.m. when Chino police and Chino Valley Fire District paramedics were called to the school, Lt. Aaron Kelliher, a Chino police spokesman, said on Tuesday, July 2. There was “a significant number of people” in and around the pool at the time, he said.

Kelliher referred additional questions to the Chino Valley Unified School District.

District spokeswoman Andi Johnston said the reason for Phan being at the aquatics center remained under investigation. Regular classes are done for the school year, but summer school is in session, Johnston said.

A vigil was held at the school on Sunday night after Phan died. On Monday, counselors were provided at the school.
