Bear Valley Road, west of Kiowa Road, was temporarily closed to traffic Saturday evening as authorities investigated a fatal collision involving a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department patrol vehicle.

A male driver in a Toyota Corolla travelling east on Bear Valley attempted to make a left turn into a parking lot just after 4 p.m. and crashed into a westbound sheriff’s vehicle as a deputy was responding to a call for service, with lights and sirens on, on the opposite side of the road, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.

The driver of the Toyota was pronounced dead on the scene. His name was not immediately made public.

The deputy was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Anyone with information about the crash was encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Department, known locally as the Apple Valley Police Department, at 760-240-7400 or use the anonymous tip line, 1-800-782-7463.
