San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies shot and critically wounded a man who they say pointed a gun at them during an attempted arrest, the Sheriff’s Department said Thursday, June 20.

The confrontation happened around 3 p.m. Tuesday at a home in the 1900 block of W. Mallory Street in Muscoy, a community northwest of the junction of the 210 and 215 freeways. The SWAT team was trying to apprehend Muscoy resident Fredy Castillo Cabrales, 37, who was wanted on suspicion of child sexual battery and child abuse, a sheriff’s news release said.

“He pointed a gun at law enforcement and a lethal force encounter occurred. Cabrales was struck by gunfire and taken to a hospital where he remains in critical condition,” the release said.

No deputies were injured, said Gloria Huerta, a sheriff’s spokeswoman.

Cabrales now also faces a potential charge of attempted murder of a peace officer.

The department asks anyone with information on the case to call 909-890-4804.
