A brush fire burning west of Perris charred at least 55 acres after spreading quickly Tuesday afternoon, June 27, the Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department said.

Multiple vehicles and at least one structure were destroyed in the fire, photos from the scene show.

Commanders on the scene requested mandatory evacuations south of Blue Sky Road, east of El Baquero Road, west of Maywood Club Road and north of Rocky Hills Road. A care and reception center for evacuees was established at Pinacate Middle School, 1990 South A St., Perris.

Some of the evacuations were downgraded to warning status Tuesday night, the fire agency said on social media.

The forward rate of spread of the fire had been halted by 5:30 p.m., Cal/Fire Riverside said. The blaze was holding at 55 acres and 5% containment, but all evacuations remained in place, the agency added

The Juniper fire was reported at about 2:32 p.m. in the 19000 block of Santa Rosa Mine Road. Flames were spotting well outside of its initial line, and commanders immediately ordered additional engines and aircraft.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
