An off-duty Colton police officer accidentally shot himself to death on Thursday, Oct. 27, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said.

Lorenzo Morgan, 29, of Apple Valley, called 911 at about 2:46 p.m. from National Trails Highway in Oro Grande, a desert community north of Victorville. He told dispatchers that he was parked on the side of the road in his vehicle and had accidentally shot himself below the waist, a sheriff’s news release said.

Morgan was taken to a hospital, where he died.

No other details of the shooting were available Friday. No one else was reported injured.

“No foul play is suspected in the shooting and it is believed this was a tragic accident,” the release said.

Morgan graduated from the sheriff’s academy in 2019 and completed his training with the Colton Police Department this year, according to the agency.

At the time of his death, Morgan was expecting a baby with his fiancée, Colton police said. He is survived by his parents and son.
