North County Transit District received a $10.2 million grant to finish preliminary engineering and environmental clearance on the Sprinter Corridor Service Improvement Project from Escondido to San Marcos, the agency announced June 26.

The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Stability and Equity program.

“This project will increase the convenience of taking transit in North County, improving access to major regional employment centers, educational institutions, health care providers, and other essential destinations,” Solana Beach City Councilmember Jewel Edson, chair of the NCTD board, said in a statement. “Getting more people out of their cars and on to transit will improve air quality and reduce congestion on adjacent roadways.”

The work spans 9.5 miles of double tracking along the Sprinter rail corridor and will help increase the frequency of Sprinter service from 30 minutes to 15 minutes, according to NCTD.

“This RAISE grant will boost SPRINTER services, benefiting communities throughout the region, particularly communities suffering from poor air quality caused by highway congestion,” U.S. Rep. Scott Peters, D-San Diego, said in a statement. “This is a win for the climate and for public health.”

NCTD also announced the appointment of Maria Rogers as director of rail operations, a position that oversees rail operations and regulatory compliance. Rogers, who has worked for NCTD since 2014, previously served as manager of rail operations.
