Oceanside police investigating shooting of man in riverbed

The victim was found with blood on his pant leg at the Oceanside transit center early Monday morning by sheriff’s deputies who were checking the area

UPDATED:

OCEANSIDE  — Oceanside police were investigating the shooting of a man that occurred early Monday or possibly late Sunday after sheriff’s deputies noticed the bloodied victim at the transit center.

The man, who was wounded in the leg, was approached by deputies who spotted him as they were walking through the transit center on South Tremont Street at West Topeka Street shortly after 8 a.m., sheriff’s and police officials said.

The man had blood on the back of his pants, so deputies stopped to ask him about it, said Oceanside police spokesperson Tom Bussey.

The man told the deputies he had been shot “in the riverbed someplace.” The deputies notified Oceanside police and the victim was taken to a hospital, Bussey said.

Bussey said the man’s wound may have been caused by a BB or pellet gun or small-caliber ammunition, Bussey said.

Police don’t have any suspects and are trying to determine where and when the shooting occurred, Bussey said.
