Man holding infant daughter shot by San Diego police after allegedly threatening girlfriend

UPDATED:

SAN DIEGO  — A San Diego police officer shot and wounded a father holding his 11-month-old daughter Sunday night after the man allegedly threatened his girlfriend with a gun and then took the couple’s infant, sheriff’s officials said.

The child was not hurt, sheriff’s homicide Lt. Michael Krugh said.

Police were called to the Chollas View neighborhood around 10:20 p.m. after a woman called to report her ex-boyfriend was outside her apartment on 47th Street south of Hartley Street and threatening to shoot through the door, Krugh said.

Fearing he was going to shoot into her apartment, the woman told police she let him into the apartment, and he pointed the gun at her and threatened to shoot her. He then took the couple’s baby girl and fled, the lieutenant said.

As he was leaving the apartment, San Diego police spotted the man and he took off running, going through the complex and a nearby trolley station and parking lot. He ended up at an apartment complex a couple blocks away, Krugh said.

Police were checking the complex when an officer spotted the man hiding in a bush and reportedly ordered him to come out with his hands up. The officer then fired at the man, striking him at least one time.

One firearm was recovered at the scene. Detectives believe “there may be more outstanding,” the lieutenant said.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the man or the police officer who shot him. Krugh said the officer has been with San Diego Police Department for a year and a half.

The sheriff’s homicide team is investigating the shooting under a countywide protocol that calls for an outside agency to investigate shootings involving law enforcement officers.

Krugh said police provided medical aid to the wounded man until they were relieved by paramedics. He was rushed to a hospital and taken into surgery and was expected to survive his injuries, Krugh said.

The man was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence, endangering a child and other charges. No other details were immediately released.

The baby was returned to her mother, Krugh said.
