SAN MARCOS — A 17-year-old boy was fatally shot while standing with two friends in a San Marcos parking lot late Wednesday, a sheriff’s official said.

The three youths were in a lot on Los Vallecitos Boulevard near Bingham Drive, homicide Lt. Michael Krugh said Thursday. The stretch of road, alongside state Route 78, is locally known as Furniture Row.

About 11:30 p.m., someone drove up, got out of the vehicle and opened fire on the three friends from about 40 yards away, Krugh said. One shot struck the teenager in his upper torso.

His two companions — a teenager and a young adult — put him in a car and raced to Palomar Hospital, where the boy died. The hospital notified sheriff’s deputies of the shooting. Investigators know the name of the slain teenager but withheld it Thursday.

Krugh said it’s unclear whether anyone else was in the car with the shooter. He said he had no information to share about the suspect, and that the motive and circumstances are under investigation.
