Arrest made in fatal shooting at City Heights apartment complex

The shooting was reported just before 2:30 a.m. at an apartment complex on 36th Street near Polk Avenue

UPDATED:

SAN DIEGO  — A 33-year-old man was fatally shot while standing in the courtyard of his apartment complex in City Heights early Tuesday, San Diego police said.

The shooting was reported just before 2:30 a.m. at a complex on 36th Street near Polk Avenue, said homicide Lt. Jud Campbell.

“The preliminary investigation showed the victim was standing in the apartment complex courtyard when the suspect approached on foot from the alley and shot the victim in what appears to be an unprovoked attack,” Campbell said in a news release. “The suspect then ran back to the alley and fled on foot.”

The victim was taken to a hospital, where he died. His name was not released pending notification of family.

Detectives identified the suspect, Edgar Sanchez, 32, as being related to a resident at the complex, the lieutenant said. While detectives were still in the area investigating about 9 a.m., they saw Sanchez and arrested him. He was in possession of a gun at the time of his arrest, Campbell said.

Sanchez was expected to be booked into jail on a murder charge.
