Motorists reported seeing a speeding driver heading north in the southbound fast lane starting at the border just after 3:20 a.m.; that car slammed head-on into another vehicle

UPDATED:

CHULA VISTA  — Two drivers were killed early Wednesday in a wrong-way collision on southbound Interstate 5 in Chula Vista, the California Highway Patrol reported.

A 16-year-old boy and a woman were killed in the crash. Investigators are still trying to determine which was the wrong-way driver, said CHP Officer Salvador Castro.

The crash occurred shortly after 3:20 a.m. Witnesses reported seeing a speeding driver heading north on the southbound freeway in the fast lane near the border, the CHP said on its online log.

The wrong-way driver hit another vehicle head-on just north of Palomar Street, the CHP said. That car burst into flames. Both drivers were killed, Castro said.

A traffic alert was issued around 4:15 a.m. on I-5 at L Street and officers diverted traffic off the freeway. The lanes reopened just before 9 a.m.
