OK, San Diego. First of all, thank you. We are incredibly lucky to be blessed with beautiful beaches, terrific weather, awesome people and, perhaps most important, stellar Mexican food. If you’re like us, you also require a giant burrito from your favorite taco shop pretty much weekly. It’s no easy task to gather a list of the very best burritos in all of San Diego, but here are our top nine picks:

Colima’s Mexican Food

Although they make a mean California burrito, it’s the Surf & Turf that pleases the masses at this corner shop-stop. It’s made with rice, guacamole, shrimp, carne asada and housemade salsa. Pro tip: Come hungry, ’cause this pick will fill you to the brim.

Rico’s Taco Shop

If you find yourself in North County, perhaps on a post-beach day, it’s in your best interest to head to Rico’s. The taco shop’s specialty is the Justin burrito, made with beans, rice, cheese, lettuce, guacamole, french fries and double wrapped in two tortillas. Whoever Justin is, he’s lucky to have this ‘rito named after him.

El Azteca Taco Shop

If you want a well-made burrito that is the size of your head, you go to El Azteca. It’s just a fact of life in La Mesa. We love their California burrito, hand-crafted with carne asada, guacamole, pico de gallo, salsa and of course, french fries.

Taco Surf Taco Shop

If you’re crusin’ in Pacific Beach and looking for a kick-ass burrito to fulfill your Mexican food craving, this is it. The California burrito from Taco Surf Taco Shop is a classic and a PB staple, with french fries, carne asada, cheese, shredded lettuce and tomatoes. This pairs perfectly with a stroll down the boardwalk on a sunny day.

Roberto’s Mexican Food

With locations across San Diego, this O.G. spot has been a staple in town since 1964. Each location is operated with care at this family chain – and no matter where we are, we opt for the hashbrown breakfast burrito. This beautiful breakfast burrito is filled with eggs, bacon, ham, cheese, sausage and of course, hashbrowns.

Yesenia’s Mexican Food

Although there are several stellar spots to stop by in the Carmel Mountain Ranch area, it’s this one we tend to go for. We adore the California burrito here, which offers a warm tortilla stuffed with carne asada, sour cream, french fries and cheese. Add guacamole, and your burrito fantasies will come to fruition.

Lucha Libre Gourmet Taco Shop

When you’re at this unique, over-the-top, wrestling-themed taco shop, you simply must order the surfin’ California burrito. The massive, fresh burrito is filled with shrimp, steak, fries, avocado, house-made chipotle sauce and queso enchilado.

Two locations: 1810 W. Washington St., Mission Hills, (619) 296-8226; and 3016 University Ave., North Park, (619) 487-1520.  tacosmackdown.com

JV’s Mexican Food

One of our favorite taco shops near Morena is JV’s, which offers over 15 different burritos, such as the grilled tilapia, chicken Philly and western breakfast burritos. Our favorite, though, is the Surf N Turf. This burrito has shrimp, carne asada, rice, salsa and guacamole. It’s also double-wrapped in two tortillas to make sure it doesn’t fall apart while you chow down.

Don Carlos Taco Shop

Fans of wet burritos should probably stop off at Don Carlos to get their fix, ASAP. Our favorite is the La Jolla, made with pollo asada, fries, salsa, sour cream and lots of cheese. You can, of course, order it the regular way for a delicious Mexican meal, but we recommend it wet with their house enchilada sauce on top. DO it.
