The Hershey Folder solo show “Our Great Tchaikovsky” only had its first performance last night, but the world-premiere work is already making sweet box-office music for San Diego Rep.
The downtown theater announced late Thursday that Felder’s piece about the Russian composer has become the highest-grossing show in the Rep’s 41-year history.
It broke a record set by another Felder show: “The Pianist of Willesden Lane,” which he adapted from a book co-written by Mona Golabek. Felder also directed Golabek in that piece, which the Rep staged in 2014.
Felder, an accomplished pianist-actor-writer, stars in the Tchaikovsky show, directed by Trevor Hay.
The production (which opens Jan. 18) is among numerous shows about composers that Felder — a frequent returnee to San Diego — has created and performed in here and all over the world.
