Introduction

Samsung's mid-range smartphones tend to utilize the company's own mobile processors. For this very reason, the company makes quite a few of them every year. The Exynos 880 is the latest addition to Samsung's lineup of mid-range processors.

Launched in May 2020, it's essentially an underclocked version of the Exynos 980. The Exynos 980 is Samsung's first processor with an integrated 5G modem. It's meant for mid-range devices, thus lowering the barrier of entry for customers looking to buy a 5G smartphone without having to pay flagship prices.

The Exynos 880 has been built with the same goal in mind, so it also comes with an integrated 5G modem. It's also meant for mid-range devices, with Samsung also selling it to other manufacturers who want to make affordable 5G phones.

Processor Cores

Arranged in a 2+6 configuration, the Exynos 880 features 2 Cortex-A77 cores at 2.0GHz for the heavy lifting and six Cortex-A55 at 1.8GHz for power efficiency. Samsung's mid-range chips don't feature its custom processor cores so these are all licensed from ARM.

Graphics Processing Unit

The Exynos 880 features a ARM Mali-G76 GPU in the MP5 configuration. It allows the chip to support advanced graphics APIs and the GPU is also capable of rendering 3D graphics in-game with a high framerate.

Memory and Storage

LPDDR4x memory is supported by the Exynos 880. The mid-range processor also has support for UFS 2.1 and eMMC 5.1 storage.

Camera

With its digital signal processor, the Exynos 880 can support multi-camera setups. It can power a single camera of up to 64Mp and a dual 20MP + 20MP camera system.

Modem

The Exynos 880 cames with an integrated 5G modem. With support for 5G's sub-6GHz bands, the Exynos 880 can hit upload speeds of 1.28Gbps and download speeds of up to 2.55Gbps. This can be further increased to 3.55Gbps with E-ULTRA_NR Dual Connectivity which combines 5G and LTE.

The modem offers a one-stop solution so it also works with other network standards all the way from 2G to 4G with LTE download speeds reaching as high as 1Gbps.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

There's a neural processing unit present on the Exynos 880 which can power smarter mobile experiences. The NPU allows for deep learning capabilities on the device itself in addition to powering the enhanced intelligent camera and virtual assistant functions.

List of Exynos 880 Phones

So far, no Samsung smartphones with the Exynos 880 have been released. However, the Vivo Y70s is the first non-Samsung device to use this chip.
