The cameras on the Galaxy S24 Ultra have been a hot topic since the Galaxy S24 series was first announced. Last year, Samsung introduced the first Galaxy S Ultra smartphone with a 200MP main camera, and in 2024, the biggest change in the camera setup comes in the form of a 48MP 5x dedicated zoom camera.
The 48MP 5x camera replaces the 10MP 10x dedicated camera found on the previous three Ultra models, and there have been some discussions among fans whether the switch is a good thing. It certainly sounds worse on paper if you only focus on the new camera's native zoom level. But that doesn't come anywhere close to giving you the full picture (no pun intended).
If you go to X/Twitter and online forums, you may come across comparisons of the Galaxy S24 Ultra's camera hardware to those of some competing Chinese smartphones, with the picture quality at 30x magnification and beyond being a particular point of contention for some folks.

But, as we pointed out in our Galaxy S24 Ultra review, the 5x zoom camera makes up for the lower native zoom level with a larger sensor that can take capture more light, improves picture quality in the most commonly used 5x-10x zoom range, and allows prettier portrait/bokeh pictures.
Samsung can also claim to offer the best overall camera experience in the Android landscape.
