The Waste Lab invites artists and product designers to create using waste

Locals and visitors stopping at Sagarmatha Next can learn about this process of upcycling and transformation where we will be showing the entire upcycling process. There is also an option for visitors to enlist and participate in the workshops and create products & art themselves.

Transformation process

Just like a prism transforming a single light into a spectrum of colours, Sagarmatha Next transforms waste to see the true beauty of a seemingly banal object. Waste becomes object d’art.

At the Waste Lab, we offer a space for this transformation process. We believe that our actions will change the perception around waste and keep the mountains clean for future generations.

Art is the new medium for communication, and through Waste to Art, we want to reach out to a global audience and share the beauty hidden inside the waste materials we throw away.

Through these visual representations at Sagarmatha Next, we hope to connect the viewers with the natural beauty of the mountains and make them aware of the impact their actions have on the surrounding environment.

Waste to Product

Waste to Product is about embracing circular economy by upcycling waste into a new product.

The waste generated in the mountains is converted into new products that will be then purchased by the visitors, resulting in the waste being removed from the mountains.

Sagarmatha Next x Super Local

From the Himalayas

To launch first line of products, we collaborated with Super Local, a Netherlands-based design firm specialized in creating and manufacturing socially and ecologically impactful products.

From the Himalayas includes three Himalaya stones and one Himalaya model made out of HDPE plastic. Plastic bottle caps are shredded and put through an injection moulding machine and upcycled into Himalaya stones. These colourful plastic stones visually appeal to visitors while using the most abundant waste thread in Khumbu – plastic.

The Himalaya stones can be bought online through our website or at Shop by moware at Sagarmatha Next (Namche Bazaar) or Taragaon Next (Kathmandu Valley).
