White Bird in a Blizzard

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Part suburban thriller, part sexual awakening drama -- and fully convincing as neither -- White Bird in a Blizzard rests a little too heavily on Shailene Woodley's typically superlative work.

Jason Bailey Flavorwire Woodley reminds us that she's not just the hippie queen of YA adaptations, but a bracing actress who's not averse to taking some gutty risks. Jun 18, 2016 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) This dreamy/nightmarish weirdie finds Araki reining in his anarchic excesses with rewarding results, as his satirical sensuality reaps the benefits of a heavily orchestrated deadpan formality. Rated: 4/5 Mar 8, 2015 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) Araki blends film noir-like elements with an engagingly offbeat, Adrian Mole-like look at adolescence. Rated: 4/5 Mar 6, 2015 Full Review Vadim Rizov Filmmaker Magazine With White Bird‘s central mystery mostly backgrounded, the unevenness of the main narrative thrust’s daily life segments weakens the impact considerably. Jan 24, 2023 Full Review Michael J. Casey Michael J. Cinema So rich, so juicy, so melodramatic that it is a delight to watch these actors sink their teeth into them. Rated: 3.5/5 Oct 27, 2021 Full Review Nick Levine NME (New Musical Express) A slow-burning indie drama... Rated: 3/5 May 27, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Kevin P How did so many talented actors end up in a film like this? Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/24 Full Review Victoria D The characters didn't have any emotional depth they all hated each other but it wasn't explained enough as to why the teenagers were "goth" I myself am a goth teenager goth is all about emotions and feelings it has nothing to do with sex I'm tired of seeing movies portraying us goth teenagers as wild sexual people we are not we like music and poetry sometimes clothes that are gothic in nature the mother had no character development neither did the father the relationship between the father and the boyfriend was random it didn't really make sense the scenes with the teenage girl and the detective were creepy and grotesque considering I'm the same age as her 17 the sex scenes didn't have any emotion they didn't really add to the plot and made me dislike the movie further the only good thing about this movie is the music and the interesting twist of the dead body being in the freezer I feel if actual goths watch this movie expecting to enjoy it they will be disappointed Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/31/23 Full Review Marlene R Insipid screenplay, lousy directing and amateurish acting that was embarrassing. A waste of good actors. Stopped watching after 45 minutes; only lasted that long because I thought maybe there was some satire or humor coming. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/23/23 Full Review Marcus H Wonderfully acted. Chris Meloni is such an actors actor! He transforms into so many diff characters. He can go from Nazi in Oz to heroic Stabler in SVU to this weak lil love starved meek husband in this role. Shailene Woodley did a good job playing sassy horny 17yo to melancholy young adult. Highly recommend seeing this Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/28/23 Full Review michael k Some movies you just wonder why it was made. The whole movie relies on the ending. That for me is always signs of a weak movie. Bleak tale of girl having dreaming where her mom went. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Captivating… but reliant on some dangerous subject matter to sensationalize. Not sure it’s justified, tbh.
