Riese Bernard Autostraddle Well, my friends: this film is not a hidden gem, it is a shame, and therefore hidden on purpose. Nov 20, 2021 Full Review Vincent Canby New York Times Mr. Downey is a funny man. Rated: 3/5 May 20, 2003 Full Review Peter Travers Rolling Stone Downey has become what every true satirist fears most: outdated. May 12, 2001 Full Review Karl Soehnlein OutWeek While Too Much Sun is hardly offensive enough to merit a community outcry, it's certainly worth a collective cold shoulder. May 19, 2020 Full Review TV Guide Although kicking off with a wickedly zany spoof of the spoiled rich, in which precious poodles are whisked off to a canine Club Med, the film's inventiveness quickly spirals downward. Audience Member Sometimes there are movies that can take a stupid premise and make something amazing out of it. Too Much Sun is the opposite effect. It has a somewhat promising comedic premise, but the execution is not good. They try hard, and I did laugh a couple of times because they have some great comedy actors in the cast who made lemonade out of this lemon of a script. The premise is that a multimillionaire is about to die. On his deathbed a priest who wants all that money convinces him to sign a new will that stipulates the estate will go to the church unless one of his children bears him a grandchild within a year of his death. The problem being...both of his children are gay. It feels like something that could work, particularly with Eric Idle and Andrea Martin playing his children, but it falls apart quickly because they don’t seem to know what to do with this idea. It jumps straight to one of them having sex in a very short amount of time, so the roadblock they built into the story becomes a non-issue within minutes. Then they get distracted with these other kids who may or may not be grandchildren that were already born prior to the old man’s death. It is chaotic, random, and loses all the comedy that was built up in the first act. There are relationships that come out of nowhere, and at one point it felt like they completely forgot what the plot of the movie was supposed to be. I got a little bit of enjoyment from Too Much Sun, but I couldn’t help feeling like it was a whole bunch of wasted potential.
