What to Know

Critics Consensus

Tomb Raider reboots the franchise with a more grounded approach and a star who's clearly more than up to the task -- neither of which are well served by an uninspired origin story.

Andrea Gronvall Chicago Reader Roar Uthaug (The Wave) directed; his work feels derivative of Steven Spielberg's first two Indiana Jones movies, though not half as entertaining. Mar 5, 2020 Full Review Robert Daniels 812filmreviews If you're coming to Tomb Raider, you're not coming for the common sense. You're coming for the action sequences. Luckily, Vikander kills in every segment she's in. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 27, 2018 Full Review Michael Sragow Film Comment Magazine But there's little [Roar Uthaug] can do with Robertson-Dworet and Alastair Siddons's script (derived largely from the "third era" of the video game), which functions like a treasure map without resonance or mystery. Mar 29, 2018 Full Review David Gonzalez The Cinematic Reel Tomb Raider is a step in a the right direction for a genre desperately needing a turn-in critical performance. While nothing to boast about with 34 films in the genre thus far, the 50 percent rating on rotten tomatoes moves the needle up. Rated: 2.5/4 Jan 31, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies A fun and often times thrilling action-adventure with a strong, believable female protagonist . Rated: 4/5 Aug 27, 2022 Full Review Merryn Johns Curve The real pleasure of this Tomb Raider is Alicia Vikander’s distinctively living embodiment of Lara Croft. Part athlete, part sleuth, this Lara is all sinew and soulful drive. May 20, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Nick G. It's okay if you like the Tomb Raider franchise, but doesn't add much. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/13/21 Full Review Master Y I can't even get through the opening scenes. She looses a fight? Definitely in the spirit of previous Tomb Raider movies. Then she's delivering food like some starving student working a job on the side. And I'm pretty sure I saw the before but it was so forgettable I don't remember a damn bit about it. I'd rather rewatch that old comical action that Jolie was so fantastic at. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/23/24 Full Review Marcin K If you liked the reboot games, than this movie is a treat. Its similar enough to the game to be truly recognisable, but different enough that it offers a few surprises. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/20/24 Full Review Jelisije J A very well done realistic adaption to one of the post popular video game female main characters of all time. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/06/24 Full Review Tom D A good attempt at a reboot, but the writing left a little to be desired. Alicia Vikander brought a fresh face to the franchise. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/26/24 Full Review Audience Member Solid but unspectacular. A little underwhelming considering how good the video game is, but certainly worth the watch for fans and even people who never played the game. It doesn’t follow the story of the game exactly, but there are some very cool callbacks to the game. The actress who played Lara is pretty good, but the rest of the cast is forgettable. Not a bad movie, but could’ve been better. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/28/24 Full Review Read all reviews
