jacob b A little-known Australian film that is actually quite entertaining. It's not Irpn Giant-levels of underrated and frankly, I don't think I'll be recommending it to fellow older animation enthusiasts in a hurry anytime soon but The Magic Pudding is a charming little cartoon from the land down under. I was surprised by the all-star cast it had who all do a good job, the animation's decent, albeit not great (I don't expect every animated film to reach Disney-level quality but I feel that, for 2000, it should look somewhat better), the story isn't unpredictable but I was amused by how it played out a bit like a prototype Finding Dory at times (the main protagonist on a search for their missing parents, are given good reason in the third act to believe they're dead and there's also the fact that the first Finding Nemo had the protagonists journeying to Australia; hell, Geoffrey Rush was in both this film and in Nemo) and even the songs are decent (especially one focusing on speculation of the titular pudding's origins), although it is a bit obvious that it was still trying to cash in on the Disney craze in this regard, which was already dying even before Shrek came out (note that this film came out the same year as The Emperor's New Groove and Titan A.E., which weren't musicals and there were already warning signs about this formula being abandoned with Tarzan - whose songs are limited to montages rather than proper show tunes - and The Iron Giant a year prior). The Magic Pudding is an above-average film that I like to think I would've enjoyed more if I saw it when I was a kid. But even at an older age, an animated disaster, this is not.
