Noah Blackwood I like to give first-time directors a chance. What we have with this movie is a story that takes its time. Let me reminisce for a moment, and explain: Great acting. Nothing is melodramatic here. Good action. This is slow-burn sci-fi, so it's more character-driven than action-driven, but the action we do get is thrilling and grounded. Great themes, great dialog. Anyone who overthinks, over obsesses, or over-analyzes their past, present, or future, will appreciate the obsessions of our leading man. A lot of solid, applicable-to-life lines. Great shots. A few examples are: 1. Water dripping off a counter after overflowing out of a glass. 2. An illuminated ferris wheel behind Nick as he searches for Mae in a fairground at night. 3. Nick imagining Mae swimming down to him in a flooded building, shafts of light making her appear ethereal and ghostlike. Great ideas. The Reminiscence machine and the flooded city are great plot points, and drive the film. Good narration. Hugh Jackman's voice is soothing, and never feels like he's expo-dumping. Every bit of voiceover is right where it should be. Great lighting. Every scene feels almost dream-like, and may very well be. Great mind-bender. You will leave this movie either hating it for what you didn't understand, or mindblown about what you saw and wanting to pick it apart to know more. You might even love it for its mystery, like Nick Bannister loves Mae for hers. A few too many characters. A lot of different people are introduced throughout the story, and not all of them get enough screen time. An unnecessary sensual scene. Nick is just getting to know Mae, and they kick things off by fornicating on a chair. For me personally, characters having sex right away doesn't equate to true love. But Nick's love for Mae is, thankfully, fleshed out to where you understand why he's so desperate to get her back. Overall, this is a solid debut from Lisa Joy. It's a film to watch again. Much like Nick uses the Reminiscence machine to find more out about Mae, over and over, you may need to watch this again and again, to understand everything. Not everyone will appreciate this movie, but for those that do, it promises to leave you reminiscing well after the credits roll. I reminded me of Casablanca at the beginning, even though it was SciFi and in the future. It was a breath of fresh air from all the super heroes and horror movies we are inundated with now. It was, at times, bordering on being a GREAT movie but it did miss that mark , but only just.
