Hunter Killer

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Much like the submarine in its story, Hunter Killer cruises the murky action depths, following a perfunctory course into territory that's been charted many times before.

Jake Wilson The Age (Australia) Once all this starts coming together, Hunter Killer is absorbing, even if Marsh and his screenwriters never pretend to be half as interested in their characters as they are in the submarines. Rated: 2.5/5 Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Bilge Ebiri New York Magazine/Vulture It's nice to spend a couple of hours in a fictional world where we don't have to worry about the American president doing something ruinously idiotic and evil. It plays like a nostalgic fairy tale. Oct 29, 2018 Full Review Robert Daniels 812filmreviews [You'll] find more enjoyment watching a plastic yellow submarine sink to the bottom of a bathtub than watching this film. Rated: 1.5/4 Oct 28, 2018 Full Review Ian Kane Epoch Times With its blend of geopolitical intrigue and action, “Hunter Killer” is sure to satisfy genre fans. Rated: 3.5/5 May 1, 2024 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com a beefy Tom Clancy-type thriller that takes no prisoners Rated: 3/5 Apr 1, 2022 Full Review Dara Khan Mediaversity Reviews Military stories in particular have long gotten away with total homogeneity, but the U.S. military is much more diverse than Hunter Killer suggests. Raymond R If you can overlook the story - which isn't plausible at all - and remember this is meant for entertainment, this is a fantastic action movie! The acting is good, the characters are good, and the beautiful Linda Cardellini returns. Even though most of the movie takes place on a submarine, they do a good job of balancing out screen time so you're not stuck in one spot for too long. I really appreciated the respect this movie gave to submarine Captains of two different factions. Yes, initially there was repulse at "we're bringing Russians here?" but it turned into "no one wants this war, we will work together." I should ignore it, but for the sake of being an accurate review, I'm going to touch upon the plot. As mentioned previously, this isn't possible. A military general staging a coup and deciding he's going to start the next war? And none of the other soldiers are like 'wait a second, that's the president, he's turning on the president!' The guy who started the coup died, which - at least for me - felt like a letdown. He took his own president hostage and was about to cause a war, yet he dies and there's no justice. So now everyone moves on like "okay, it's over." Great movie for action and excitement, but not at all a story driven movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/20/24 Full Review Sean T Writers/director clearly unfamiliar with US naval operations, culture and conduct. So many errors in the first five minutes alone. The movie cannot be taken seriously at any level. Considering the cast (Oldman, Butler), really have to put the blame where it belongs: The writers, director and producers. I'd sooner watch a Steven Segal flick, and that's really hitting rock bottom. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/03/24 Full Review David W Predictable plot with a lack of attention to detail regarding how a United States attack submarine is operated, let alone the conduct of the officers and crew. SO MANY mistakes in the first 20 minutes that after a time suspending disbelief and trying to enjoy the movie becomes an impossibility. (Not to mention that 18 years prior Hunt for Red October got most things right. ) Don't waste time watching this at home ; there is good reason in bombed at the box office. A stellar cast means that the fault lies with the director and writers. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/03/24 Full Review Tom B I'm biased due to the fact that I have read all early Clancy books featuring submarines, so I have my own expectations as to what technical accuracy should be. This movie is maybe better than Iron Eagle and that's about all I can say about it. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/01/24 Full Review Deborah B Saw this movie opening weekend because I'm a huge Gerard Butler fan and see anything he is in. Even if I'm not interested in it! But this movie was really good which great characters and a believable plat. I bought it on blu ray as soon as it was available. Really enjoyed it Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Soph H I thought this movie was edge of your seat anticipation. My family loved it. Fantasy or not, it's nice to see a movie where people from opposite sides can come together and overcome some of the evil in this world. The underwater photography or CGI, whatever, was realistic, the violence wasn't overbearing and the lead characters were easy to relate to.
