What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite a thought-provoking premise and Clint Eastwood's typical flair as director, Hereafter fails to generate much compelling drama, straddling the line between poignant sentimentality and hokey tedium.

Deborah Ross The Spectator The direction is utterly bland. The film doesn't care about its own subject matter, or have anything to say about it. Aug 30, 2018 Full Review Kaleem Aftab Independent (UK) Aged 80 Clint Eastwood has made a film that is completely different in style, tone and structure from anything he has delivered before. May 15, 2018 Full Review David Ansen Newsweek Hereafter confronts a topic that could have descended into mawkish, mystical hokum, but not in Eastwood's no-nonsense, uncynical hands. He looks at death, and beyond, with clear, open, inquisitive eyes. Feb 6, 2018 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review As his directorial efforts in the last several years have confirmed, even at his poised version of 80, Eastwood continues to grow as an artist, expanding his horizons through the material he chooses and the way in which it’s presented. Rated: 3.5/4 Aug 3, 2023 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) This movie leaves a lot it think about - however you wish to interpret it - it leaves it's mark, and doesn't finish when it ends. [Full review in Spanish] Jul 15, 2022 Full Review Jason Best Movie Talk Clint Eastwood's latest movie opens with a spectacular natural disaster, an awesome scene (inspired by a real event) that takes the viewer's breath away. After that, disappointingly, this earnest drama about the afterlife is a bit of a plod. Dec 4, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Patrick F Touching, thought provoking, and romantic. The subject is something everyone can relate to, even if you are not a believer. Matt Damon does a convincing job, and Bryce Dallas Howard was very believable in her role. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/03/24 Full Review Tammie H This was a beautiful little movie...nothing fancy, but so touching. I loved the way the characters came together and how their stories, though tragic and sad, actually made you feel hopeful. It gave answers to unanswerable questions, and the best part was the beautiful music that scored the entire piece...all written by Clint Eastwood. I would definitely recommend. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/19/24 Full Review Tom C Really loved this movie. Three separate stories of touching the hereafter that all come together at the end. A spectacular tsunami scene. A poignant child losing his twin brother senselessly. And a clairvoyant with the curse of his skill making relationships with other people often impossible. I thought it was incredibly well done and the acting was fabulous. Bravo!! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/18/24 Full Review YMH Y It's a good movie about a subject most people are uncomfortable with, the afterlife. Well written and well acted. Clint Eastwood did a great job directing. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/24/24 Full Review Jelisije J Look I love Clint Eastwood as a director and actor, but this film is way too long that offers no surprises about three people with three different storylines all meeting each other too give us a confusion that we see a tens of miles away. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/08/24 Full Review donnie m 'trying' to watch this right now because i've seen almost everything on t.v. and 1 star off because mat damon smacks when he eats and the movie and his acting is horrible Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews
