What to Know

Critics Consensus

With all of the hyperkinetic action and none of the flair of Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor's earlier work, Gamer has little replay value.

Keith Uhlich Time Out Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor direct with their usual flashy brio. Rated: 3/5 Nov 17, 2011 Full Review Kim Newman Empire Magazine An injection of adrenaline straight to the eye - which isn't entirely a bad thing. Rated: 3/5 Sep 18, 2009 Full Review Sukhdev Sandhu Daily Telegraph (UK) Can I get back the ninety minutes of my life that I squandered sitting through this miasmic upchuck of techno sludge? What was the story again? Rated: 0/5 Sep 18, 2009 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review A hostile movie that pretends to contain some semblance of criticism toward escalating video game brutality and social detachment. But its commentary is presented underneath an orgy of Hollywood movie violence and gratuitous boob close-ups. Rated: 1.5/4 Sep 4, 2023 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com A throwaway film. Rated: 1.0/4.0 Sep 8, 2020 Full Review Nick Rogers Midwest Film Journal Unquestionably the greatest Gerard Butler film (and not the same as a film with Gerard Butler). No, it's the ne plus ultraviolence of knucklehead action on which he's cornered the market -one splattering him with brains while showing its own. Dinos K Gerard Butler is really bad actor and doing only sh*tty movies Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/16/24 Full Review Joshua T Underrated for what it is. Story is simple. Action is good. Feel good ending. Little bit of social commentary. Dexter dances around a bit. Made on a shoestring budget. Not sure why everyone's so down on it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/26/24 Full Review Roshan S Was the last movie I watch with my uncle before he passed away, was so touching, had epic combat and occasional thriller moments. Had us on the edge of our seats, a movie that'll stay close to my heart :) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/03/24 Full Review Davey C I can see why people don't like it that much. But if they do a remake of this movie now mines the boobs scenes and the beginning part interview that made it look like it was a documentary. I think it could pass and be a good horror/Thriller movie. But to me i think it was pretty good. If i could find this in the store i would add it to my collection. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/29/24 Full Review Forged S Keeping with the theme of my video game holiday, here is a film, filled to the brink with people at the top of their game. Neveldine and Taylor, just coming off of their Crank series, gave us a unique social commentary on our world if Mark Zuckerberg had created his Metaverse, irl. Also starring Gerard Butler, just coming off of 300 (and who would move on to Olympus has Fallen) and Michael C. Hall of Dexter fame, this is a fun movie with an interesting story. However, the frenzied, rapid-cut editing, at times, took away from the story, performances and amazing stunt work on display. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/10/24 Full Review April H Solely on the basis they killed Terry Crews. The best of the Cruises/Crews Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/08/24 Full Review Read all reviews
