Anna Smith Sight & Sound Fighting with My Family's trump card is an emotional one, and it's well played. Dec 11, 2019 Full Review Jake Wilson Sydney Morning Herald Yet realism, emotional or otherwise, is beside the point: this is a film that prints the legend, perhaps on the assumption that nothing is too cornball for true wrestling fans. Allan C Florence Pugh (OPPENHEIMER, MIDSOMMAR) got her big break playing real-life WWE star Paige in this wrestling biopic. I'd somehow come across this film and noticed it was written and directed by Stephen Merchant, co-creator of THE OFFICE, and co-stars Nick Frost (SHAUN OF THE DEAD) and Lena Headey (GAME OF THRONES) as Pugh's British minor league wrestler parents. Despite rampant cliches, ranging from fish-out-of-water, with Pugh traveling to Florida to audition for the WWE for tough-but-fair coach Vince Vaughan, competing against Barbie-looking fellow wrestler, to the familiar underdog story (can this scrappy little punk rock girl fit in with the American style of wrestling and showmanship?), the film completely works on a genuinely human and emotional level that was utterly satisfying. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed a WWE film. It's nothing original and I'm only vaguely familiar with the real-life wrestler (my kids did go through a wrestling phase and I do seem to remember her), so I can't vouch for any of the film's authenticity, but Pugh is far more compelling and believable than a film of this sort deserves, and writer/director Merchant is far more talented of a filmmaker than I would have expected to make a "wrestling picture" which he certainly did give that "Barton Fink feeling" (film nerd joke). Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/17/24 Full Review Jonathan K This is almost two stars for me because I absolutely couldn't care less about professional wrestling, but... this was still an entertaining diversion on an airplane. Per usual with stories based on real life protagonists, they had to sensationalize the heroic moments a bit to make the end more exciting. Honestly how else could they have done it, when wrestling is fixed/scripted? But all in all, it has some heart and some humor and is a fine kill-a-couple-hours movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/02/24 Full Review DennisFeinsteinCEO Comedy, drama, action, it's got it all. You don't even have to be a fan of wrestling to enjoy this, this is an uplifting, feel-good movie 🤙 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/11/24 Full Review Amir A Florence Pugh is so beautiful and gorgeous in this movie. I love the family elements in the movie and the Wrestling moves were cool. I mean they taught a blind teenager how to wrestle that actually became a professional wrestler. And So did Paige as she made it onto WWE. But When Dwayne Johnson called the dad to tell Paige she is competing in WWE Raw, he said "Hi I'm Dwayne Johnson" and the Dad Said "Yeah and I'm Vin Diesel" and then The Rock Said "I Sure Hope not" which shows how big their feud was. Overall Fighting with My Family(2019) was a good watch and Florence Pugh was really good in this. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/07/24 Full Review Rory M Vince Vaughn, Florence Pugh, & Jack Lowden shine in offbeat wrestling drama. Packed with truisms about finding your way in life. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/23/23 Full Review Ron G Loved it. Has soul and a heart of pure gold. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/01/23 Full Review Read all reviews
