Mike P This is an awesome (if strange) TV movie based on The Family sketch from The Carol Burnett Show; that aired way back in 82. (And which also served as a pilot for Mamas Family).. It's strange because you don't usually see a TV movie with a laugh track. Infact, it's not really a TV movie...It's more like a Carol Burnett Show event. It reminds me a little bit of like The Coneheads Movie, or the Blues Brothers; or Wayne's World. One of those skits expanded in to whole movies... And it's absolutely as good as those movies as well! I mean, it's not quite as hilarious as the show skits were; but it's absolutely got that delicious bittersweet quality and the awesome performances that made the original skits so special. And overall it's a great experience. Another Rottentomatoes critic, Phil Hall, slammed the movie and said "Carol dismembers mamma". And in a weird way he's correct. It IS like one of those talky, intense Theodore Dreiser or Arthur Miller family plays...Spliced together with a hilarious SNL skit. I mean, like Death of a Salesman meets Roseanne...Tragicomic! In the best way... And it really works! I mean it's a great combination, I really enjoyed it. And also... After watching this I really think Eunice is Carol Burnett's musings and impressions about her own real mother. She's always talking about how her mother was so funny and bitter in interviews, and about how thought she missed out on some big showbiz career...That's Eunice all over! Anyway...this is really great stuff. Comedy Gold. Seriously! Overall: highly recommended for fans of the series.
