What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite solid production values and an intriguing premise, Constantine lacks the focus of another spiritual shoot-em-up: The Matrix.

Lewis M Possibly one of the most convoluted films I have seen in a long time. I actually had the original Hellblazer comics when they first came out in the late 80's. I got interested in the character of John Constantine, and the comic book was superb compared to this film. The supporting cast is good in this, but the story and all the subtexts are completely muddled. Peter Stormare, Tilda Swinton and few others obviously shine as they always do. First rate actors. Keanu Reeves and Rachel Wiesz are decent enough in this, but the film doesn't really rise in any direction. However, if this supernatural material is up your alley, I suggest finding the original comics of Hellblazer now put together in book form. Way superior in content and humor- quite unlike this movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/02/24 Full Review Kim C I have watched this several times. It never fails to reel me in. Keanu Reeves is perfect. Peter Stomare is the best film devil I've ever seen. Just a really, really, watchable joy. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/19/24 Full Review Weighty Connected L The dialog lines often sound cringey or weird (which may be intentional), and the premise is quite crazy and out there, and as most movies, not a reliable source of correct theology or knowledge about spiritual things, but the story, stunning visual effects and production design, as well as the performances of the cast, including Keanu Reeves and Rachel Weisz, make this 2005 film thrilling and exciting. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/29/24 Full Review Forrest S A modern fantasy classic. Cheesy in all the ways it's source material demands, but engrossing enough to keep you invested. The greatest comic book film made to date. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/01/24 Full Review Andrew H Other than a genuinely outstanding performance from Peter Stormare, constantine is a relatively safe and unexceptional interpretation of the DC Comics character. It's neither a terrible movie nor a great one. It's worth watching once for the fantastic Lucifer performance, but I've never felt the urge to return to it. Maybe a rewatch is to see if I'm wrong in my opinion, but on this occasion, I don't think I am Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/27/24 Full Review Hargie M I'm still hopeful that we'll get a sequel.
