What to Know

Critics Consensus

Daring, provocative, and laugh-out-loud funny, Blazing Saddles is a gleefully vulgar spoof of Westerns that marks a high point in Mel Brooks' storied career.

Wendy Ide Times (UK) Gene Wilder is perfect as the alcoholic gunslinger the Waco Kid, and Madeline Kahn steals the show as a Dietrich-like chanteuse. Feb 8, 2024 Full Review Pauline Kael New Yorker Most of the gags in Blazing Saddles never were very funny, and probably Brooks knows that and thinks that what's funny about those rotten old jokes is how unfunny they are. Sep 21, 2023 Full Review Joseph Gelmis Newsday Most of the shorter sequences work nicely. The superb comedienne Madeline Kahn has a role as Lili Von Shtuppe that la a wonderful excuse for her to do a Marlene Dietrich imitation. Jan 30, 2023 Full Review Fico Cangiano CineXpress Podcast A fantastic, fun comedy that was ahead of its time. Mel Brook's sharp parody of the cowboy genre, also tackles racism with some lightning shots. Moorhead Phoenix Magazine Not only is it an affectionately riotous parody of the cowboy genre, it also keenly engages very real and deep-seated issues of racism in American life. Aidan B Far and away one of the greatest comedies ever made, Mel Brooks delivers an outrageously hilarious and unashamedly offensive film that works on every level. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/22/24 Full Review Scott D Blazing saddles is an iconic comedy, this film stands the test of time. People may see it as not politically correct, but the movie is really a way to make racists look stupid. Mel brooks is an all time comedic genius, cleavon little and gene wilder make this a must see movie no matter how long ago it was made Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/15/24 Full Review Ken A A fantastic comedy for it's time and one that should be seen by the younger generation of today. This is a classic movie that could not be made today. Leave your feelings at home and respect this movie for the great work that it is. Bringing social and stereotypical situations to the forefront for everone to see with a laugh is the best way for some people to understand just how ridiculous they are and can be in those situations. Anyone who judges this movie as if it was made today needs to take a step back and respect Mel Brooks and the other actors dedication to bringing those issues front and center on the Silver Screen when everyone else in Hollywood was trying to hide them at the time (and some may say even still today). Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/20/24 Full Review Jelisije J A very good comedy western that I feel is a bit overrated, but its still defiantly worth a watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/14/24 Full Review Bucky R Still funny 50 years later. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/11/24 Full Review Jeff M It is rare for me to laugh out loud when watching a comedy by myself. And while this wasn't quite as uproariously funny as I expected, there were a good 6-8 times I laughed out loud, including the infamous campfire scene. I think it's safe to say that this movie could NEVER be made today. Its use of racial and sexual slurs is admittedly uncomfortable and hard to laugh at in today's climate. But aside from that, this is a consistently enjoyable and clever comedy - when you aren't laughing you're definitely at least smiling. Standouts for me in the cast were Korman, Brooks himself and a small Oscar-nominated performance by Madeline Kahn in a side splitting take on Marlene Dietrich that you wish were a bigger role. The film takes an unexpected turn in the fourth quarter which ultimately works in spite of (or maybe because of) the sheer craziness of it all. This is Brooks firing on all cylinders, and those not easily offended will most likely enjoy the hilarity. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review Read all reviews
