Critics Consensus

13 Minutes explores an oft-neglected corner of World War II history with just enough craft and narrative momentum to offset a disappointing lack of subtlety.

Calvin Wilson St. Louis Post-Dispatch Although "13 Minutes" is a period piece, it addresses issues that continue to resonate in society. Rated: 3/4 Aug 17, 2017 Full Review Soren Andersen Seattle Times [A] gripping, somber German-language drama based on actual events ... Or at least to try. Rated: 2.5/5 Jul 27, 2017 Full Review David Lamble Bay Area Reporter 13 Minutes is a fine example of physical and moral courage from an unlikely source. Jun 5, 2020 Full Review Steven Prokopy Third Coast Review 13 Minutes has a distinct case of peaks and valleys in terms of holding my interest, but there were enough unique and interesting touches to give it a mild recommendation. May 11, 2020 Full Review David Brake One Room With A View Elser is an ocean lapping on to the beach. From above the sea is calm and serene, but underneath, the world swirls with chaos; Hirschbiegel's film replicates this to produce a fascinating, consuming drama. Gareth v A decent enough telling of the true story of Georg Elser. A solid enough biopic that just seems to be playing it too safe. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/02/22 Full Review Audience Member One of the best and perhaps most genuin of many WW2 films, based on the true and amazing story of Georg Elser, one of several people who tried to assassinate Hitler with a bomb and nearly succeeded, but the only one who did it all by himself. 13 minutes is the English title and it describes the time frame he missed with in his attempt to kill Der Führer. The German orginal title is Elser, saying more about the actual film. The plot is basically a depiction of his life as a craftsman and factory worker in the time before the outbreak of the war, well balanced as a retrospective to the assassination attempt, capture and the following interrigation by the Gestapo and SS. However, the film has a weakness in an overempasized focus on Elser's complicated and secret relation to the married Elsa Härlen, this at the expence of a wider narrative about his anti war conviction and political views, along with his impression of and view on the Nazi regime and Hitler, the motives to his ultimate destined decision and the actual core of the story. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Serge L Great acting for a story worth knowing. Elser is a true hero that understood early the extreme danger the Nazi was for Germany itself. Effectively, the germans had lost their minds to think they would not have eventually to pay for their murderous rampages. However, historically, if his murder had succeeded, germany could have done better during the war and maybe even won it, since a few bad decisions were later attributed to Hitler himself, like the attack on Russia instead of England. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/25/18 Full Review Audience Member Lost its way at times, but an entertaining film, from a rarely explored historic event Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review pasha a Has Oliver Hirschbiegel really made "Downfall?!"
