What to Know

Critics Consensus

This truncated adaptation of Frank Herbert's sci-fi masterwork is too dry to work as grand entertainment, but David Lynch's flair for the surreal gives it some spice.

Harper Barnes St. Louis Post-Dispatch The special effects are mediocre -- the miniatures look like miniatures, the sets look like sets, the matte paintings look like matte painting. And even the much dreaded sand worms are about as scary as Missouri night crawlers. Feb 15, 2024 Full Review Desmond Ryan Philadelphia Inquirer Lynch's screenplay has all the vivacity of a Gregorian chant. Although his direction of individual scenes is inspired, Lynch the writer sabotages Lynch the filmmaker. Feb 14, 2024 Full Review Pauline Kael New Yorker The movie is heavy on exposition, and the story isn't dramatized -- it's merely acted out, in a series of scenes that are like illustrations. Feb 14, 2024 Full Review Jack Garner Rochester Democrat and Chronicle Ultimately, Dune is a most magnificent flying machine that can't quite get off the ground. But even if it can't fly, it's certainly impressive to look at on the runway. Rated: 3/5 Feb 16, 2024 Full Review Jeff Simon Buffalo News It's a remarkable film by a remarkable talent. Feb 15, 2024 Full Review David Wilson Tulsa World Dune does a good job of introducing us to another solar system, but it is full of such soap-opera dialogue and pretentious seriousness that many won't find it worth the trip. Lisa M One of my all time favorite films!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/04/24 Full Review April R It is a flawed masterpiece. But seeing in cinema was a mind bending experience!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/21/24 Full Review A S It's different from the books for sure. But I enjoyed it. Good cinematography, sfx okay for the era. Better acting than a lot of movies these days. Not amazing, but all in all worth a watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/28/24 Full Review Dave M The casting is magnificent. The set design alone is worthy of academy awards. The book was always considered impossible for film adaptation and yet they did it. My reasons for loving this film are too many to list. Lynch's own denunciation is less about film quality and more about editing and final cut. If you were an adult in 1984 as I was, you will likely agree that this film was unprecedented in its ability to visualize an entirely different world with riding giant worms, ingesting hallucinogens, advanced stage navigators folding space, whole fleets of space ships. Don't listen to the haters. This film is glorious! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/20/24 Full Review HR G I understand the reputation that this movie has, after all David Lynch was blocked on all sides by production, money and studio. But this still has a special place in my heart. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/18/24 Full Review Alex M Although the visuals were interesting, this is an excellent lesson of what can go wrong when you try to create too close an adaptation between two different mediums. The movie tried to copy the famous sci-fi book it's based on very closely, and this resulted in scenes that were oddly paced and dialogue that was unnatural. A movie is not a book and, and you need to make adjustments to make something work from one medium to the next. The writers and directors didn't bother to do this and the result was a slow, boring film with unnatural sounding characters. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/18/24 Full Review Read all reviews
