We Asked Our Community: How Do You Honor Juneteenth?

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, is a day of profound historical significance in the United States. It marks the anniversary of the moment in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom — more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation had officially outlawed slavery in the Southern states. This pivotal day, blending the words "June" and "nineteenth," has evolved into a celebration of African American culture, resilience and the ongoing fight for equality.

We asked our Road Scholar Facebook community how they honor Juneteenth, and here’s what they said:

—Barbara M.

“We reflect on the past, recognize the progress made and commit to the journey still ahead.”
