Update: Garnett Allan Chappell arrested safely, faces new charges

Garnett Allan Chappell was arrested on July 4, at 9:15 p.m., in Mahoney's Corner. He was wanted on two province-wide arrest warrants for charges including Pointing a Firearm and Failing to Stop After an Accident Resulting in Bodily Harm, and now faces several new charges related to the arrest.

In the early evening of July 4, police officers from Cumberland County District RCMP Street Crime Enforcement Unit and Cumberland County District RCMP learned information about Chappell's whereabouts. Officers attended the area and upon observing police presence, Chappell attempted to run away on foot. After a brief pursuit, he was safely arrested.

During a search of the vehicle and building that Chappell was seen in, RCMP officers located multiple loaded firearms and a variety of ammunition, all of which were seized.

Stemming from the arrest and associated searches, Chappell is facing twenty-four new charges, in addition to the previous warrants, including:

  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose (3 counts);
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm (3 counts);
  • Careless Use of Firearm (3 counts);
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime.

A second person was also arrested during this incident. Shawna Rushton, 43, of Wentworth, is also now facing the several firearms-related charges.

Both Chappell and Rushton had first court appearances on July 5. Rushton was released by the courts on strict conditions and pending future court appearances, and Chappell was held in custody also pending future court dates.
