For nine years I’ve been part of the Harvard Medical School system, first as a trainee, now as faculty member. I'm trained primarily in psychodynamic therapy, but principles/interventions from other paradigms also inform my work. Ultimately, the nature of therapy depends on the patient and their goals. For this reason, the course of therapy is hard to describe, but it seems only to work amidst empathy, respect, and compassion, not to mention humor (sometimes life can only be laughed at). This is a perspective I lay out in some detail in a new two-volume book, published by Routledge, titled, "A Humane Vision of Clinical Psychology."
At its best, therapy assists people in improving not just their immediate problems but also their baseline levels of peace of mind. This is achieved in myriad ways, which cannot be predicted prior to beginning treatment and depend on who the patient is and what their life and history looks like, but it always begins with honest and creative dialogue.
While we therapists can write about our experiences, specialties, and accolades on websites like this one, there is still no substitute for sitting down with different providers in order to simply see what the fit feels like. I'd probably suggest doing that, then making decisions about who/what works for you. Best of luck in the process. robgraceffophd.com
