Regardless of what describes your situation with trauma and/or anxiety, I can help you.
Trauma (well, and life) can be tricky. It could be what clinicians call a “Big T” trauma in the form of abuse, neglect, living through a natural disaster, etc.; or it could be a “little t” trauma that stems from your 2nd grade teacher who had a flippant attitude toward you for reasons unbeknownst to you. Often times the “little t” traumas manifest for us in the same ways as “Big T” traumas. We may be aware of our trauma responses but often times we are clueless and just know that something weird is happening within and we can’t really identify or explain it. We just know it isn’t working for us and we want to change it.

Life is full of curves. There is no one straight line to a meaningful happy life. I raised my family and then made my way back to college to finish my goal of completing graduate school. Most recently, my focus has been caring for older adults and working with teens struggling with depression, anxiety, self-harm and other mental health issues both in-person and virtual settings. I also have an advocacy background in domestic violence and sexual trauma. The process of therapy can be unpredictable, especially when you realize how strong you really are and maybe just needed a little clarity to take your next steps to a happier life!

My counseling practice is tailored to working with adults with issues including relationship difficulties, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, parenting issues, life stressors and transitions, and spiritual crises. It can be difficult finding the "right fit" in a counselor and I am available to discuss my approach more fully and answer questions prior to the first appointment. For individual issues I use a Cognitive Behavioral approach which has proven to be highly effective in a reasonable time frame. In couples counseling I work quickly to identify areas where couples get "stuck" and identify practical tools that have been proven effective.

Parts of life can be incredibly hard and painful. We aren’t meant to go at it alone. You may be struggling with anxiety, depression, emotional suffering, self-worth, relationship difficulties, or generally feeling stuck in life. Or, you may be feeling disconnected from yourself and searching for self and purpose. I believe counseling is an opportunity to help people cope with life challenges, lessen pain, change in meaningful ways, AND experience joy and vitality.

I specialize in working with adults with complicated concerns, such as dual diagnoses, mood disorders, anxiety, substance abuse histories, and anxiety.
Are you living the life you want? Or do you, like many others, wish your life was different? Do you wish that you were different? Do you spend your days just barely making it through? If so, I'd liked to help. None of us get through life unscathed. Trials and difficulties are a natural part of the human experience. However, it is possible to face these things while still living a healthy, fulfilling, meaningful life. And it is possible to love who you are without having to be perfect. I am here to help you to learn to do just that.

Time and time again, I have witnessed the transformative power of authentic self-connection. It can lead to relief from anxiety and depression, regaining a sense of self, and more. As an Art Therapist, my wish is to empower you to tap into your creativity and use it as a tool for self-expression and healing while gaining a deeper understanding of yourself. I believe that everyone has the capacity for growth and change, and my goal is to empower you to tap into your inner resources. My therapeutic approach combines humor, curiosity, and compassion with a healthy dose of "telling it like it is".

I work with a generation of achievers. From a young age, you're taught to shoot for excellence in academia and extracurricular activities; you have to work twice as hard to get half as far, right? This high-pressure environment didn’t stop when you reached adulthood. You have worked hard to obtain the career, licenses, and status that you want; but it can feel empty at times. There is a race against the social clock that feels like it can’t be won, constant comparisons through social media, and anxiety to maintain the mask of happiness hiding burnout in your personal and professional life.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
