I am also trained to use Comprehensive Resource Model to work with dissociation resulting from complex trauma.
I believe that each person is born unique and important to this earth. Behavior is adaptive and as such can be understood in the context of experience. I assist with helping others understand patterns of behavior that may contribute to one's unhappiness. I work with marital and relational difficulties to find ways of communicating and honoring differences. I teach about positive communication and assist with developing skills that lead to feeling heard and understood. I assist parents to successfully teach their children to accept and follow direction with the use of behavioral programs best suited to meet the individual need.

I work with individuals and couples and take a trauma informed approach to therapy, assisting my clients to better understand themselves and others.
Welcome! My client’s often tell me that I am genuine, kind and put them at ease, while also challenging them at the times when they need to be pushed. I strike a balance between therapy always feeling safe and comfortable, but also a place where you can be pushed to re-evaluate you needs and actions. I specialize in working with the LGBTQIA+ community, as I am a part of this community and this is a passion of mine. The primary focus of my practice is trauma therapy, neurodiversity (ADHD, Autism), and the LGBTQIA+ community. I am also an affirming provider of all relationship configurations (polyamory, ENM, kink, BDSM).

I work with individuals who have experienced traumatic events which they may need help overcoming. During my postdoctoral fellowship, I treated active military diagnosed with PTSD, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse by conducting both individual and group therapy. Working with active military, I learned how to gain the individual's trust and confidence to let me into their lives, providing a nonjudgmental space to process life's events. My research has concentrated on men's issues. My doctoral dissertation focused on professional boxers and how they adjusted to retirement once the fame and fortune was gone.

I truly believe we all have the resources within us to grow and heal. However, there are times we become "stuck" in life and overcome with fear or other factors. I am passionate in working with children and adults in helping them recognize deeper/underlying issues or past traumatic experiences that can impair a person's function each day in various ways. I specialize in anxiety, depression, PTSD, and complex trauma (Ie physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, DV, life adjustments, grief/loss). I am trained in EMDR, a research-based treatment that facilitates the brain's own capacity to heal.

Together we can start the process of trauma recovery, allowing you to leave behind the thoughts, emotions, and ways of relating to others that haven't been serving you.
Life can be challenging enough when we don't get in our own way. As it turns out, many of us never learned how to identify and manage our emotions, relate to our worries and self-judgments with compassion, or navigate relationships from a lens that considers how our past experiences might influence how we connect with others today. If you are seeking another way to live, with less suffering and more peace, you are in the right place.

Life is stressful; and women experience this in unique ways. Trauma, loss, early childhood experiences, recurrent behaviors, career stress, and body and life-cycle changes can result in difficulties with a woman's self-esteem, relationships, mood, sexuality, spirituality, and health. Similarly, couples can develop patterns of relating from early experiences which result in conflict, loneliness and despair. Therapy provides deeper insight into our needs, choices, beliefs, behaviors, and emotions. Dr. heinzelmann focuses on offering the tools needed to move toward emotional and spiritual wholeness.

I work with individuals, families and adolescents in the areas of substance abuse, trauma, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, communication and relational distress.
Everyone has a unique story. Therapy is a safe place to come and deeply explore that story. We all get stuck from time to time in patterns of unhealthy thinking, behaving, and relating, and sometimes we need help changing those patterns. Therapy works in such a way that you gain insight into areas of your life and leave feeling empowered. I offer support, validation, empathy, and a safe and respectful place to share dreams, hopes, fears, and triumphs. I help clients accurately assess their challenges and identify ways they can change, capitalizing on the strengths they already have and encouraging them to build new ones.

The first step on the path to healing can be the hardest. Often times, we feel fragile, whether it be from past trauma, debilitating depression, anxiety, conflictual relationships, and the overall stresses attributed to life. Sometimes we feel surrounded by people who look but do not see us, hear but do not listen or understand which can lead you to feel isolated, disconnected, and misunderstood. Therapy is a space to navigate this desolate plane, a place to help you achieve a more fruitful and fulfilling connection with yourself and others. I have experience working with couples, individuals and families.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
