I believe in supporting you to lead a more balanced life no matter what experiences you have had or what issues you are currently dealing with. Sometimes stressful or traumatic events can hamper our ability to cope with life’s challenges and leave us feeling overwhelmed, stuck and worn out. If you are struggling with anxiety, depression, low self esteem, stress or processing trauma past or present, I will support you in your journey to finding your feet again. I have a deep appreciation for the wisdom of the body and tools that support working with instead of against ourselves.

I offer a safe, confidential space to explore what is happening for you, focusing on building resilience and self esteem so that you will be able to come to recognise patterns in your life and past that are holding you back.
Sometimes we get overwhelmed by life and what life throws at us. Trying to make sense of what is happening can often feel like we are going around in circles. We may feel we are not coping and have little options available to us. I have worked with survivors of intimate partner abuse for many years. During my time working with survivors, I have encountered depression, anxiety, addiction and low self esteem. Relationships are our key to a healthier life, if your relationships with friends and family or work are causing you anxiety, expressing what is going on for you is the first step to freeing yourself from patterns you experience.

From my perspective, psychotherapy means healing. It is the opening, where individuals begin to experience a more full contact with themselves and the outside world. I help them understand their emotions that signpost their needs. I help them to discover their unfulfilled needs and, together, we look for obstacles and barriers that could prevent people from fully enjoying their lives. One step at a time, they become increasingly ready to lead their lives consciously. They begin to authentically live, rather than continue, their lives.

No man is an island! Yet connection with others is not always easy. I work with Adult & Adolescent clients with relationship issues, low self-esteem, social anxiety, depression, stresses of everyday living, may have suffered abuse, bereavement and loss, or had a difficult childhood where their needs were not met. Are you feeling unsettled, overwhelmed or in distress? I help the client explore within themselves to gain clarity, perspective and understanding about themselves and their lives, enabling them to move forward through the blocks in their path to embody a more positive future for themselves.

The Gestalt therapy model that I work within promotes the use of creativity, action and a dynamic appreciation of the client's whole world. Every client has a unique situation and unique reasons for deciding they want to come to therapy. While certain issues may be universal in nature e.g. anxiety, depression, grief, relationship issues (including friendships and work colleagues), struggles with self-esteem, long-term or terminal illness, each person's way of coping with them is as unique as their personality and circumstances.

I have worked with a range of clients issues including depression, bereavement, stress, anger management, self esteem, relationship issues ,panic attacks, gay and lesbian issues.
*I am an Accredited member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP) and I have been in private practice as a Humanistic Integrative Counsellor in Cork since 2005. This form of counselling is most effective when used to assist clients to develop their own personal awareness of themselves and look within to find their own answers. If you are going through a difficult time, feeling depressed, are having difficulties in your relationship or are finding it hard to cope , if you feel you simply need some support and someone to listen to you in a non judgemental way counselling may help.

Self Esteem Counsellors

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?

When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?

Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?

Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
